i'm not into TropDep's music although i appreciate Kabilugan Ng Buwan and Kapayapaan. still, more to Papa Dom's credit, the band commands respect much more than their music has made them popular. they can arguably be considered the country's flagholder in the reggae genra. and staying true to their medium despite hush-hush reception aside from critical acclaim is something to admire in itself.

when my friends lineup this band with other masa acts like Aegies, i tended to dismiss them as just another masa band mumbling hapless words. i was almost ashamed to admit i liked Lakas Tama and Lagim the very first time i heard them... it is funny just how pop culture opinions can be so prejudicial sometimes. but this band has proven that being masa and still maintain sense is not impossible. we only have to look at the array of records they have on their sleeve challenging Parokya Ni Edgar even without so giving in to the comedy formula.

after the alternative meltdown, new wave became an in-thing locally in Tagbilaran City. that was around 2000. and this band had a publicized concert at the now-defunct Busai, Bohol Quality Complex. mistaking them as just one of those show cover bands in visayas simply milking the appetite for party of the young local elite, i purposedly missed the event. 5 years later, i saw them in national tv and i was more than surprised. i was angry. how could i miss that moment to watch the pre-stardom act of this wonderfully bittersweet musical unit. stupid me. but then how could i know that this humble lads from cebu would turnout to push the southern invation in manila and help advance indie music awareness into the filipino music scene.

CIR is a legend before becoming a star. Hand-Painted Sky is a testament of a sort, albeit a bit short to the expectations of their cult followers. their succeeding followups supported their legacy of crafting pop songs without being popsie... they sell records without being sellouts in terms of musicality. CIR somehow manages to retain that sound so unaggressive yet quite peacefully unconventional. despite their hush-hush popularity mainly maintained by Cookie's showbiz visibility, CIR still earns the respect of many in the industry for what their honesty and sincerity to what they are doing.

for a band that earned so much naysayers in the elite rock circles, it seems to take great courage to admit liking them. i wont. but to hell with the elites, i will go as far as saying that even though i'm not so sure of the band members themselves, i honestly like their music... anyway, the loudness of their critics only proves their popularity. although popularity cannot at all guarentee creativity, it shall be these young fellas' attitude that shall determine if they will be there to stay long or would just be another shooting star. if the way they handle their fame wont improve (re: too showbiz-flirting), i wont be surprised if they'd end up becoming one of those staple showbands (Rockstar comes to mind) instead of earning the respect they otherwise deserve.

i first encounter them in the pages of the now-defunct Rock N' Rhythm mag as the famous crossdressing, pop song-spoofing, comedy rock band that provides smiles at Club Dredd without failure. Notoriously Ateneans and uncompromisingly naughty, this band hit big-time with Buloy. yet, by that time i never thought they would reach the height they enjoy now. enduring the changing trends in pinoy music scene and relying much on the filipinos' penchant for sarcastic and green humor, this band threatens to be the most resilient act in pinoy rock history without ever changing its line-up. to that i'd say: rock on!

rivermaya's story is an item in itself aside from the fact that they seconded the e'heads in both outputs and popularity during their days, and emerged to have more longevity. i bought their debut album unsure of whether they really are worth anything and despite hating their very first hit song Ulan. it was a mere symptom of my obsessive-compulsive shopping habits. fortunately, there were songs in that album that indeed caught my fancies and that 'catch' proved to be contageous enought for me to continue buying their records up to the Atomic Bomb lp. that doesn't mean that i cease to appreciate their music after... indeed, i think their more 'anthemic' songs came afterwards, though i would venture to say their creativity as a unit were better before that album. rico blanco, despite all that he is, is undiably one of the most prolific songwriter in pinoy rock... and it bouys rivermaya's status as a serious band despite their beginnings as a production rock outfit.

i purchased ultraelectromagneticpop expecting nothing... i was so busy digesting the whole grunge/alternative thing from MTV and Rock N' Rhythm mag, when i bought it. initial impression was, the quality of the album was 'raw'... that's putting it positively and in defense of a friend's criticism of local records. to me, it really was indeed subquality compared to Alan Silvestri record's of that time... but it nonetheless showcases the ecclectism and versatility the e'heads could offer... something they proved time and again after each record release... my romance with e'heads music lasted till Carbon Stereoxide - and to me, and i believe it is the case, the eraserheads' creativity never waned until the end. instead, it has mutated and matured, perhaps not always to the liking some critics. we only have to listen to the spinoff bands that each member formed later to see the point...
